More Brownouts To Hit Mindanao

DIPOLOG CITY, Aug. 2 (PIA) -- Starting on Monday, Aug. 1, the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) has implemented a Mindanao grid-wide power load curtailment due to insufficient generation from power plants.

This was the advisory issued by the NGCP media group headed by Atty. Cynthia Perez-Alabanza who said that "approximately 92 to 150 MW was withdrawn from the grid due to the forced outages suffered by several generating plants."

"Curtailment levels yesterday were at 92 MW grid-wide at 11:00 a.m. and 150 Mw at 1:22 p.m. based on the load curtailment matrix provided to the NGCP by the National Power Corporation (NPC)," explained Alabanza.

Alabanza, however, said the power curtailment would be lifted once there is enough available capacity coming in to the grid from the power plants.

It could be recalled that during the first and second quarter of 2010, Mindanao suffered longer brownouts due to insufficient generation from power plants aggravated by the dry spell.

Certain groups especially the businessmen are calling on the government to address the power problem in Mindanao as the power supply in the island has remained unstable up to this time. (ALT/FPG/PIA-Zambo. Norte)
