New York City: The Washington, DC-based Migrant Heritage Commission (MHC) for the first time sent its Youth Envoys for Unity and Service to the 9th Annual UN Youth General Assembly in New York City on August 3-5, 2011.
Thirteen young Fil-Ams have been selected on the basis of academic excellence and committed community service through active cultural and humanitarian outreach participation.??
"We take pride in sending our first batch of?MHC?Youth Leaders to the UN Youth General Assembly. We hope to do this every year for our?MHC?Youth Envoys for Unity and Service, the future leaders of America",?says MHC Co-Executive Director Grace Valera who accompanied the youth delegation with MHC Co-Executive Director Jesse A. Gatchalian. MHC's Fil-Am delegation was the only Filipino-American contingent at the Global Youth Assembly .?
MHC is a not-for-profit organization serving immigrants all over the US with its legal support, cultural development, education, youth development, and information programs.?
The UN Youth Assembly gathered about 600 youth leaders ?from around the world to involve them in the achievement of the UN's 8 Millennium Development Goals.?"The UN Youth Assembly is a great avenue to prepare our young people to continue the good work that we all started and carry on the torch of service to humanity,"?said Janet Salazar of the Foundation for the Support of the United Nations or FSUN, an active affiliate supporter of the annual Youth Assembly. One of MHC's co-executive directors, ?Arnedo Valera, Esq. is also a FSUN representative to the UN's Global Peace, Security and Migration.
MHC's youth leaders took their oath as MHC Youth Envoys for Unity and Service on June 25, 2011 during the First International Migrants Rights Summit (IMRS) at Marriott Wardman Park Hotel in Washington D.C.?
They are: Matthew Aninzo, Raymund Valera Jaramillo, Alex Valera, Samantha-Jamilee Salazar Domigpe, Hannah Grace Cabrera Johnson, Lizane Joyce Mata, Heather Marie Horner, Nerissa Lumban, Chessa Nekka Taboada, Heather Carlson, Joan Kate Salvacion, Christa Langjahr and Christopher Relos.?
The first batch of MHC's Youth delegation is a cr?me de la Cr?me group because not only were they selected on the basis of active community service, youth leadership and cultural participation (most of them are versatile active members of MHC's Fil-Am Dance Ensemble) but also on their being recipients of Presidential Academic Awards, honors (Summa cum laude/ magna cum laude/ cum laude or were straight "A" students)??and other worthwhile student awards.
Incidentally, the 9 young lady delegates for the first batch are also all teen beauty queen title holders from ISA's Miss Teen Philippines-America, Mutya ng Amerika, Miss Teen Philippines Pageant Inc. and Miss Philippines Migrant Heritage.
