Three videos making a programme by an organization based in Manila give a cautionary tale to those living in or thinking of living in the Philippines, including investing.
A group known as Foreign Assistance Center Philippines (FAC)?has been set up to assist those who have fallen foul of spurious or illegal arrests in the country.
Several cases have come to light where foreigners living in or working in the Philippines have been subject to arbitrary arrest, and offered quick release if they pay over a hefty bribe. In all the cases listed in the following videos, it is clear that no crimes were committed by the accused, and that the arrests were clearly false.
The videos also details how people can be held without bail for long periods, in some cases several years, without bail and without any proper charges being levelled.
FAC, which is German expat in origins, has had some success in highlighting problems, and is able to manouver its way through the morass which is the Philippine justice system. It also shows how it has got people illegally accused and detained out of jail.
Details of how to contact FAC, including its website are below.
They are possibly a better starting point than the respective countries embassies, several of whom are very loath to give more than the most basic of assistance to their nationals, even in cases where it is obvious there is blatant flouting of rules to keep people in jail.?
